Evaluating Websites

Google Scholar

What is Google Scholar?

Google Scholar is a search engine that focuses on a wide range of scholarly literature without all the ads you find in Google. It retrieves information from journal publishers, university repositories (e.g. dissertations, open access articles), conference papers, books, and other sources that identify as scholarly.

Before you Search

However, not everything you see in Google Scholar is peer-reviewed so you must evaluate what you find for credibility. Also, not everything you find in Google Scholar is free to access, some publishers will charge a fee to access an article, so we recommend taking the title of the source and searching in OneSearch to see if SMC Library owns a copy.

If you need any help, you can always ask a librarian using the chat box on the left.
