Araya

Araya

The peninsula of Araya in northeastern Venezuela, is one of the most arid places on earth. For five hundred years, since its discovery by the Spanish, the region’s salt has been exploited manually. A 17th-century fortress built to protect against pirate raids stands as a reminder of the days when salt was worth almost as much as gold and great fortunes were made. Benacerraf captures the life of the salineros and their back-breaking work in breathtaking images.

Fireworks

Brimstone & Glory

The National Pyrotechnic Festival in Tultepec, Mexico is a site of festivity unlike any other in the world. In celebration of San Juan de Dios, patron saint of firework makers, revelry engulfs the town for ten days. Artisans show off their technical virtuosity, up-and-comers create their own rowdy, lo-fi combustibles, and dozens of teams build larger-than- life papier-mâché bulls to parade into the town square, adorned with fireworks that blow up in all directions.

Argentinian folklore dancer waving her skirt

Argentina

Argentina explores the heart of traditional Argentine folklore via a series of choreographed tableaux retracing a history rich in original culture. The unique mise en scène of the dance mixed with awe-inspiring traditional songs performed by the musicians make it unique. Poetic, riveting and moving, this live performance choreographed by Carlos Saura calls on the entire history of a country set to the tune of guitars and accordions.

Cassandro, the Exotico!

Cassandro, the Exotico!

After 26 years of spinning dives and flying uppercuts in the ring, Cassandro, the star of the gender-bending cross-dressing Mexican wrestlers known as the Exoticos, is far from retiring. But with dozens of broken bones and metal pins in his body, he must now reinvent himself.

Frida

Frida

Best Actress nominee Salma Hayek stars as Mexican surrealist Frida Kahlo in this biopic, which chronicles her turbulent marriage to Diego Rivera, her political activism and the severe pain she experienced following a bus accident.

Botero

Botero

BOTERO is a poetic documentary of one of the world's most prolific living artists, Fernando Botero. Born in Medellin, Colombia in 1932 to a poor family, Botero witnessed the death of his father at an early age and experienced a violent and tumultuous political landscape in his youth during the Colombian civil war which had a profound impact on his art and humanitarianism. The film is a behind-the-scenes chronicle of the life and art of the 88-year-old master artist whom the art world has compared to Picasso.
